Canadian Dollar and Business Outlook: Loonie, oil higher to start week

WINNIPEG – The Canadian dollar slightly increased to begin the week.

As of 8:34 a.m. CST, the loonie was at US$0.7842 or US$1=C$1.2752 on Monday, compared to US$0.7830 or US$1=C$1.2772 on Friday.

The United States Dollar Index was down 0.31 points at 96.96. Last week, both the Bank of Canada and the U.S. Federal Reserve announced plans to raise key interest rates in the coming months.

Benchmark crude oil prices continued their rallies on Monday. Brent crude oil jumped US$1.13 per barrel at US$91.16. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) increased US$0.39 to US$87.21/barrel. Western Canadian Select (WCS) advanced US$0.51 to US$74.80/barrel.

The TSX/S&P Composite Index started the week adding 61.20 points to 20,802.95.

Gold surged US$11.00 per ounce to US$1,797.60.
