– City of Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson declared a state of emergency on Sunday, as the ‘Freedom Convoy’ remained firmly entrenched on Parliament Hill. Watson was curt in stating that truckers blaring their air horns and setting off fireworks has become a major problem. The mayor didn’t indicate which powers now available to the city might be used. Also over the weekend, Ottawa Police said they will arrest anyone attempting to supply fuel to the demonstrators’ vehicles.

– French President Emmanuel Macron stated on Monday that a resolution to the Russia-Ukraine border crisis is possible. Macron is scheduled to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow to discuss the tensions that are threatening war. “We must protect our European brothers by proposing a new balance capable of preserving their sovereignty and peace. This must be done while respecting Russia and understanding the contemporary traumas of this great people and great nation,” Macron commented to the media.
– Negotiations to restore the nuclear deal between Iran and the West have been set to resume on Tuesday in Vienna. Reports stated that the eighth round of talks could see a deal finally reached. Although Iran refuses to negotiate directly with the United States, a number of European countries have been acting as go-betweens. In 2018, the U.S. unilaterally withdrew from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action with permitted Iran to develop nuclear power to some extent while the U.S. lifted economic sanctions against it.
