Global Markets: Canada to send more weapons to Ukraine

WINNIPEG – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

– In an emergency meeting of NATO leaders in Brussels on Thursday, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced his country will send what weapons they can to Ukrainian forces defending their country against the Russian invasion. Trudeau has hinted in recent comments that his government will be committing more funds into national defence. However, Canada’s Defence Minister Anita Anand had previously said that Canada’s stock of surplus of weapons is now largely depleted. After an appeal from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for additional help from NATO, the alliance’s secretary general Jens Stoltenberg reiterated a commitment to send Ukraine equipment to protect against chemical, biological and nuclear attacks.

– Canada’s Natural Resources Minister Jonathan Wilkinson said in an International Energy Agency meeting in Paris on Thursday the country will increase its oil and gas output by the equivalent of 300,000 barrels a day by the end of the year in order to displace Russian fuels. Two-thirds of the output would be crude oil and the rest would be natural gas. Canada’s offer would replace less than five per cent of Russian gas imports and less than 10 per cent of Russian oil imports to Europe. The United States and the European Union also reached an agreement to increase supplies of natural gas to Europe by the end of 2022.

– The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) conditionally approved Rogers Communications Inc.’s C$20 billion takeover of Shaw Communications Inc. on Thursday. Rogers will be required to play C$27.2 million in benefits to the broadcasting system and was instructed to provide annual reports on pledges to bolster local news coverage. The CRTC also said safeguards will be put in place to protect independent programming services in negotiations with Rogers.
