– Tensions between the United States and North Korea showed few signs of slowing as U.S. Defense Secretary James Mattis warned North Korea to “cease any consideration of actions that would lead to the end of its regime and destruction of its people.” North Korean leader Kim Jong Un meanwhile, laid out plans to target an area near the U.S. territory of Guam for a missile strike.

– Canadian soldiers have erected tents to house mainly Haitian asylum seekers wanting to enter Canada from New York State. Many fear deportation by the U.S. government. About 250 people arrive each day in Montreal. The tents set up near the U.S. border will be added to Olympic Stadium, a former hospital and school that are already being used as temporary housing.
– The number of Americans seeking unemployment benefits rose last week, even as the trend toward a tighter labour market remained unchanged. Claims for state unemployment benefits increased by 3,000 last week, to 244,000 for the week ending Aug. 5, the U.S. Labor Department said. The total is still below 300,000, the threshold normally associated with a healthy labour market, where it has been for 127 weeks. The U.S. unemployment rate is 4.3 per cent.
