Winnipeg, December 20 (CNS) – Prices for chickpeas in Australia are falling as Indian companies switch to cheaper pulses like yellow peas. According to a report on theland.com.au, the decrease is occurring despite a smaller chickpea harvest in Australia this year. Increased competition from countries in the Black Sea region was also credited with the downturn. India slapped a 50 per cent tariff on pea imports from all countries on November 8, in a bid to bolster their domestic industry.
Farmers in central South Dakota are attempting to help out a beleaguered pulse plant in their area, according to a story in The Capital Journal. The South Dakota Pulse Processors plant started up in January of this year but was recently forced to lay off some employees and has asked for time to pay its lease. Local supporters of the plant say there is a lot of potential for pulses in the state. They also point out the plant is the only processor in South Dakota.
