Feed Grains: US winter wheat plantings slump

WINNIPEG, Jan. 13 (CNS Canada) – CORN futures in Chicago ended a quarter of a cent higher on Friday, as traders positioned themselves ahead of the long weekend. Prices were still feeling pressure from Thursday’s USDA report that called for corn reserves to hit multi-year highs. The report also called for lower feed demand and lukewarm US export potential.
Feed wheat bids in Saskatchewan are down 20 cents on the week. According to data from Prairie Ag Hotwire, prices are between C$3.46-C$5.00 a bushel.

Winter wheat plantings in the US are pegged at 32.4 million acres in 2017, by the USDA. That is down 10 per cent from last year and 18 per cent below 2015. It is the second lowest amount ever recorded.
Hard red winter wheat is expected to hit 23.3 million acres, which is down 12 per cent from last year. Nebraska and Utah both had record low acreage.
Soft red winter wheat is pegged at 5.68 million acres, which is down six per cent from last year.
Feed barley bids in the key cattle feeding area of
Lethbridge, Alberta were in the C$165 to C$170 per tonne range
as of January 6, according to the latest pricing information from the provincial government. Feed wheat prices were somewhat higher, coming in at approximately C$185 per tonne.
