Feed Grains: CDN all-wheat acreage surprises

Winnipeg – Following are a few highlights in the Canadian and world feed grains markets on Friday, April 21.
All-wheat acreage in Canada is expected to be slightly lower than last year, according to the latest acreage estimates from Statistics Canada. The agency pegged this year’s acreage at 23.182 million acres, down slightly from last year’s 23.212 million acres. Despite the reduction in acres though, the total surpassed most estimates by analysts heading into the report.
Spring wheat acres rose over a million acres to 16.644 million.

Canadian corn acres (for grain) rose by 400,000 acres to 3.751 while oats rose by nearly 600,000 acres to 3.419 million. Barley acreage was pegged at 5.880 million acres, down from last year’s total of 6.390 million.

Feed wheat bids in the key cattle feeding area of
Lethbridge, Alberta were in the C$180 to C$185 per tonne range
as of April 14, which was the same price compared to the previous week, according to the latest pricing information from the provincial government. Feed barley prices were down a dollar at the low end of the range, at C$159 to C$165 per tonne in Lethbridge.
