WINNIPEG, Sept. 14 (CNS Canada) – American farmers have planted a small winter wheat crop according to wheat group executives in states accounting for half of winter wheat acres.
While last year’s winter wheat crop was the second smallest in more than 100 years, this year’s crop could be even smaller, according to UkrAgroConsult, a market analysis firm. Low prices have farmers shifting to more profitable crops, such as soybeans, and parched soils are limiting fall seeding, said UkrAgroConsult.

Smaller barley harvests in Europe and Australia, the top two barley exporters in the world, are helping Russia exports, which have increased 60 per cent this year. Russia is expected to increase its barley exports for the 2017-18 shipping season more than any other supplier, said the United States Department of Agriculture. Russia’s harvest is expected to climb by 17 per cent to a nine-year high of about 18.5 million tonnes. Russian has already shipped 1.5 million tonnes since July.
