WINNIPEG – The Canadian dollar was mostly unchanged on Thursday while weekly jobless claims in the United States hit its lowest number since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
As of 8:34 a.m. CDT, the loonie was at US$0.8114 or US$1=C$1.2324, compared to Wednesday’s close of US$0.8111 or US$1=C$1.2329. The U.S. Labor Department announced on Thursday unemployment claims fell to 290,000, a total indicative of a healthy labour market.
Benchmark crude oil prices continued to ease as Brent crude oil fell US$0.83 per barrel to US$84.99. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) dropped US$0.67 to US$82.75/barrel. Western Canadian Select (WCS) retreated US$0.57 to US$68.70/barrel.
The TSX/S&P Composite Index dipped 37.91 points to 21,150.28.
Gold declined US$1.00 per ounce to US$1,783.90.
