Canadian Dollar and Business Outlook: Loonie steady, TSX tumbles

WINNIPEG – The Canadian dollar held steady on Monday.

As of 8:36 a.m. CST, the loonie was at US$0.7895 or US$1=C$1.2666, same as its closing rate on Friday.

The United States Dollar Index jumped 0.48 of a point to 96.20, as U.S. Treasury yields continue to rise.

Benchmark crude oil prices were mixed on Monday as supply issues in Libya and Kazakhstan eased. Brent crude oil was down US$0.15 per barrel to US$81.60. Meanwhile, West Texas Intermediate (WTI) added five cents to US$78.95/barrel. Western Canadian Select (WCS) gained nine cents to US$66.13/barrel.

Due to rising U.S. Treasury yields, the TSX/S&P Composite Index fell 120.89 points to 20,963.56.

Gold shed US$6.20 per ounce to US$1,791.20.
