Canadian Financial Close: Loonie falls below 74 U.S. cents

Greenback gains more strength

WINNIPEG, May 12 (MarketsFarm) – In the face of gains by the United States dollar, the Canadian dollar slipped below 74 U.S. cents on Friday.

The Canadian dollar closed at US$0.7389 or US$1=C$1.3534, compared to Thursday’s finish of US$0.7420 or US$1=C$1.3477. On the U.S. Dollar Index, the greenback advanced 0.652 of a point at 102.525.

Benchmark crude oil prices slightly weaker on Friday due signs of the U.S. and Chinese economies slowing, which has led to concerns over global demand.

Brent crude oil gave up 74 cents at US$74.24 per barrel and West Texas Intermediate (WTI) lost 73 cents at US$70.14/barrel.

The TSX Composite Index closed virtually unchanged on Friday with a small uptick of 2.01 points at 20,419.62.

Gold was down US$4.10 at US$2,016.40 per ounce.
