Nova Scotia’s provincial government has up to $10,000 for one farmer who proposes a new way to handle business challenges on his or her farm.

The province’s new Agri-Food Innovation Award, funded through the “renewal” pillar of the federal-provincial Agricultural Policy Framework (APF), is to go toward the planning and development process of the winning farmer’s proposal.

The funds can also be used in tandem with other government programs, such as the Canadian Agricultural Skills Service (CASS) or the provincial Agri-Food Industry Development (AFID) fund, toward programs and services such as personal or business development, consultants’ services or “investigative travel.”

Applicants have until Feb. 15, 2008 to complete and submit their application forms, including a written description of the project idea, to the business development and economics division of the Nova Scotia Department of Agriculture.

Agriculture Minister Brooke Taylor said in a release Thursday that the province has a well-developed ag industry but there are growth opportunities for the sector. “This is one way we are encouraging producers to look at new ways of doing business and developing it,” he said.
