(Resource News International) — The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has lifted restrictions against imports of canola meal produced at a Bunge Ltd. canola plant in northeastern Saskatchewan.
Deb Seidel, Bunge’s director of communications for North America, said in an email that the company’s plant at Nipawin, about 140 km east of Prince Albert, has indeed had its restrictions lifted.
The FDA had blocked shipments of meal from the Nipawin plant since May 2009, after a delivery of canola meal tested positive for salmonella. The plant has made no deliveries to the U.S. since that time.
Canola meal is used as a protein source in feeds and not directly used as food.
FDA’s announcement comes just two weeks after the agency lifted restrictions against Bunge’s oilseed crush plant at Hamilton, Ont.
Shipping restrictions, however, are still in effect at the Bunge plant at Altona, Man., about 100 km south of Winnipeg.
