Feed Grains: Canadian barley stocks up 12 per cent

WINNIPEG, Feb. 3 (CNS Canada) – Canadian barley stocks, as of December 31, 2016, came in at 6.352 million tonnes, according to updated data from Statistics Canada. That was up by about 700,000 tonnes, or 11.7 per cent, from the same point the previous year, but in line with market expectations.

All-wheat stocks in the country, of 25.031 million tonnes, were about 3.6 million tonnes ahead of the year ago level, with durum accounting for most of the difference. Durum feed usage numbers were up on the year, but non-durum feed usage held steady.

Chicago Board of Trade corn futures posted small losses on Friday, as good South American production prospects weighed on values.

Feed barley bids in the key cattle feeding area of Lethbridge, Alberta were in the C$160 to C$170 per tonne range as of January 27, which were relatively steady compared to the previous week, according to the latest pricing information from the provincial government. Top end feed wheat prices were also steady, at C$178 to C$185 per tonne in Lethbridge.
