WINNIPEG, Nov. 18 (CNS Canada) – The Canadian livestock sector will be using considerably more wheat and durum in its rations in 2016/17 compared to previous years, according to updated supply/demand tables from Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada.
The AAFC’s market analysis division is now forecasting durum feed usage at 803,000 tonnes, which would be well above the 298,000 tonnes that fell under the feed, waste, and dockage banner in 2015/16. Wheat moving to feed channels (excluding durum) is forecast at 3.977 million tonnes, which would be well above the 3.187 million tonnes fed to livestock the previous year.
Corn futures at the Chicago Board of Trade were higher on Friday, as good export demand recently encouraged some speculative short-covering.
Feed barley bids in the key cattle feeding area of Lethbridge, Alberta were in the C$172 to C$180 per tonne range as of November 11, which was relatively steady compared to the previous week, according to the latest pricing information from the provincial government. Top end feed wheat prices were off slightly, to range from C$188 to C$190 per tonne in Lethbridge.
