Feed Grains: Canadian grain stocks up from year ago

WINNIPEG, May 5 (CNS Canada) – Canadian grain supplies heading into the new growing season are considerably larger than they were a year ago, according to stocks data released by Statistics Canada on May 5.

Barley supplies in the country, as of March 31, were pegged at 4.6 million tonnes, which was up by about 900,000 tonnes from the same point the previous year. All-wheat stocks, at 16.6 million tonnes were about 2.3 million ahead of the year-ago level, while corn supplies, at 8.4 million, were up 600,000 tonnes on the year.

The larger Canadian grain stocks were due in part to a larger-than-normal amount of the grain grading as feed, which limited the export demand.

Chicago Board of Trade corn futures were stronger on Friday, with concerns over seeding delays in parts of the Midwest providing support.

Feed barley bids in the key cattle feeding area of Lethbridge, Alberta were in the C$149 to C$157 per tonne range as of April 28, which were down slightly compared to the previous week, according to the latest pricing information from the provincial government. Top end feed wheat prices were up slightly, at C$180 to C$190 per tonne in Lethbridge.
