Feed Grains: China corn production estimates vary
By Commodity News Service Canada
June 28 (CNS Canada) – The Chinese agriculture ministry reports that farmers there planted 88 million acres of corn this year. That would represent a drop of 2.9 million acres from last year. China projects that acreage would produce a harvest of 212 million tonnes.
However, other surveys by analysts have corn acres falling further. The latest one conducted in the second week of June by Dalian Commodity Exchange suggested corn acres have shifted to soybeans or rice. It forecast that total corn acreage could fall by 15 to 30 per cent in the northeast region where more than a third of the country’s corn is grown. Estimates in China are often difficult because of the large number of small-scale farmers that dominate rural areas.
