Feed Grains: Costco feed mill construction underway

WINNIPEG, June 22 (CNS Canada) – Ukrainian barley exports continue at a rapid pace. According to UkrAgroConsult, Ukraine has exported 5.25 million tonnes of barley as of May 2017, 19 per cent more than all of 2016.

Exports to the European Union were at 348,000 tonnes, compared to 227,000 tonnes for all of last year. Exports to Libya were at a record 920,000 tonnes. Ukraine is posting barley export increases to all key customers, said UkrAgroConsult.

Construction on Costco’s new US$300 million feed mill got underway this week in Fremont, Nebraska. The mill is expected to begin production in 2019. The 400-acre site is expected to include a poultry production facility, in addition to the feed processor and will be managed by Lincoln Premium Poultry on behalf of Costco Wholesale.

A study published recently in the journal Animal Nutrition suggests that storing corn for more than four years can lead to decreased performance and meat quality in broilers. The study by China Agricultural University and Auburn University recommends corn not be kept longer than four years if used as a feed ingredient, due to the loss of nutritional elements over time.

Corn futures at the Chicago Board of Trade were down 6 cents U.S. to US$3.6275 for July contracts. The United States Department of Agriculture said for the week, corn trade was on the low end of expectations. Higher worldwide production and forecasts for cooler weather and rain in the U.S. cornbelt provided offsetting forces. Volume traded was at 161,284.

CW feed barley offered for sale in Olds, Alta., is currently selling for C$167.85, according to Agfinity.com. At Leduc it was being offered for C$160.96.

In Goodsoil, Sask., #2 CWSWS wheat was selling for C$186.22.
