Feed Grains: Increased European grain production forecast

WINNIPEG, March 2 (CNS Canada) – The European Commission is forecasting increased grain production in the 28-member countries in 2017/18, with barley, corn, and soft wheat all expected to see considerably larger crops.

European Union barley production in the year is forecast at 62.7 million tonnes, which would be up 5.0 per cent on the year. The crop is expected to be 10.3 per cent larger, at 66.6 million tonnes, while soft wheat is forecast to be up by 6.5 per cent, at 143.0 million tonnes.

Informa Economics released updated South American production estimates, raising its forecast on the size of Brazil’s corn crop by two million tonnes, to 91 million. The company left its prediction for Argentina’s corn crop unchanged at 35.2 million.

Chicago Board of Trade corn futures were down on Thursday, seeing a modest correction following recent gains.

Feed barley bids in the key cattle feeding area of Lethbridge, Alberta were in the C$154 to C$164 per tonne range as of February 24, which were down slightly compared to the previous week, according to the latest pricing information from the provincial government. Top end feed wheat prices were also down, at C$170 to C$180 per tonne in Lethbridge.
