Feed Grains: Irish wheat faces bleak future from disease

Winnipeg – Following are a few highlights in the Canadian and world feed grains markets on Tuesday, March 7.
Prices for Alberta feed barley fell seven cents over the past week, according to the Prairie Ag Hotwire. Bids are now going for C$2.40-$3.33 a bushel.
Feed wheat bids in Saskatchewan rose 5 cents per bushel on the week to a range of C$3.41-$4.70.
A new report says wheat crops in Ireland could soon be a thing of the past unless new measures are taken to curb disease problems. A report by The Independent says Septoria, a fungus that causes multiple yellow leaf spots, is no longer responding to traditional fungicides. One scientist told the paper if something wasn’t found soon to control the disease, it would be uneconomical to grow wheat in Ireland in five or six years.

According to the Hydrometeorological Center of Russia, winter wheat did very well over the past few months and a good harvest is expected. The report, which is posted on grainboard.ru, says a lack of freezing and good moisture content in the soil has set the stage for a “very good harvest” of both winter wheat and rye.
Feed barley bids in the key cattle feeding area of
Lethbridge, Alberta were in the C$152 to C$162 per tonne range
as of March 3, which was roughly two dollars weaker compared to the previous week, according to the latest pricing information from the provincial government. Feed wheat prices were the same as the previous week, coming in at C$170 to C$180 per tonne in Lethbridge.
Corn futures at the Chicago Board of Trade fell by two to thre cents per bushel on ideas the USDA could raise corn acreage in its Thursday report. Cases of bird flu have turned up in Wisconsin and Tennessee which was bearish for the market.
