By Commodity News Service Canada Winnipeg, Jan. 19 (CNS) – Following are a few highlights in the Canadian and world…

The dryness in the southern parts of Alberta and Saskatchewan were expected to cause yield drops and that appears to be the case with barley.

Most production is based in Alberta, where producers are expected to harvest 3.720 million tonnes (4.398 million in 2016). Yields there declined to 67.9 bu./acre from 77.7 bu./acre in 2016.

Saskatchewan farmers are expected to harvest 2.651 million tonnes of barley this year (3.375 in 2016) with an average yield of 56.6 bu./acre compared to 69.8 bu./acre a year ago

In Manitoba, barley production is estimated at 396,000 tonnes, compared to 540,000 a year ago. Average yields there are slightly lower at 70.1 bu./acre compared to 72.9 in 2016.

Oat production on the Prairies is estimated at 3.363 million tonnes. That compares to 2.828 million tonnes seen a year ago.

Ontario farmers are expected to harvest 66,300 tonnes of oats this year, slightly behind last year’s harvest of 64,800 tonnes.

The Prairie wheat crop took a significant hit this year, according to the estimates, with production expected to be 22.811 million tonnes for all wheat types, compared to 28.664 million tonnes in 2016.

Saskatchewan led the way with 10.201 million tonnes (14.549 million tonnes in 2016.) Alberta estimates are for 8.998 million tonnes (9.898 million tonnes in 2016) and Manitoba farmers are expected to bring in 3.613 million tonnes (4.218 million tonnes in 2016).

Average wheat yields declined in those key growing areas that were experiencing moisture shortages. Yields for all types of wheat in Saskatchewan fell to 33.7 bu./acre, compared to 47.3 bu./acre in 2016. Alberta yields fell to 47.4 bu./acre from 58 bu./acre in 2016, while in Manitoba, outside of the most heavily moisture deficient areas, wheat yields dipped to 49.7 bu./acre from 53.1 bu./acre a year ago.
