According to a report from Farm Credit Canada, winter wheat
on the Prairies received ideal growing conditions last fall and
is thought to have survived the winter with little damage. A few
areas, mainly in Manitoba, have some water pooling which is a
concern, but in its hardened and dormant stage, winter wheat can
last for weeks under standing water. The crop will remain in its
winter stage until soil temperatures rise above 9 C, by which
time the water will likely be gone.
Barley exports from Russia are on the decline. In February,
Russia exported 103,800 tonnes of barley which was nearly 30 per
cent less than the previous month.
Chicago Board of Trade corn futures climbed three to four
cents to start the week. Prices were buoyed by investor short-
covering in the wake of Friday’s USDA report. Corn acreage in
the US is expected to decline significantly, which underpinned
prices.
Feed wheat bids in the key cattle feeding area of
Lethbridge, Alberta were in the C$179 to C$185 per tonne range
as of March 31, which was roughly a dollar weaker compared to
the previous week, according to the latest pricing information
from the provincial government. Feed barley prices were up seven
dollars at the low end of the range, at C$165 to C$168 per tonne
in Lethbridge.
