– Following the lead of its allies the United States and the United Kingdom, Canada has ordered family members of diplomatic staff in Ukraine to leave the country. On Monday night, the Canadian government urged citizens to leave the country if they are non-essential. Meanwhile, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Monday an invasion by Russia was not imminent despite acknowledging the threat and accepting more military equipment from the United States. Ukraine’s defence minister Oleksii Reznikov added that Russian troops along the border with Ukraine have not yet formed “battle groups” which would indicate an upcoming invasion.

– Heavy snow, more than 80 centimetres in some areas, fell in Greece and Turkey on Monday, putting both Athens and Istanbul into a standstill. A low-pressure system from the north Atlantic Ocean brought snow to both countries, which forced people to abandon their cars and walk home. Those cars are now hampering snow-clearing efforts. Freezing temperatures were also recorded in the Balkans with one Montenegrin village hitting a low of minus-33 degrees Celsius.
– Today marks the second anniversary of the identification of the first COVID-19 case in Canada, a 56-year-old patient admitted into Toronto’s Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. Since then, nearly three million Canadians have been infected with the virus, which includes more than 32,000 deaths. While 82 per cent of eligible Canadians have been fully vaccinated, many doctors and epidemiologists warn COVID-19 will still be widespread in the future due to vaccine inequity.
