Global Markets: China denies missile test, condemns Canada, U.S.

WINNIPEG – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

– The Chinese Foreign Ministry refuted a report from The Financial Times on Monday, saying it tested a “space vehicle”, not a nuclear-capable hypersonic missile. The media outlet reported on Saturday that the missile flew through space, circled the globe and cruised down towards its target, missing it by 40 kilometres. On the previous day, China condemned Canada and the United States for sending warships through the Taiwan Strait last week, claiming they are threatening peace in the region. Both the USS Dewey and the HMCS Winnipeg sailed through the waterway on Thursday and Friday.

– Five members of the U.S. House Judiciary Committee, in a letter to Amazon.com Inc. CEO Andy Jassy, accused the company’s top executives of misleading and lying to Congress about its business practices. The letter followed a Reuters investigation claiming Amazon copied products and rigged search results in India to increase sales for its own brands, which Amazon denies. The letter also said the committee is considering referring the matter to the Department of Justice for criminal investigation.

– In a 102-page document, activist investor TCI Fund Management Ltd. unveiled a plan on Monday for Canadian National Railway Co. to improve returns at the railway with a new focus on efficiency. The firm, which owns five per cent of CN Rail, argued that the railway should expand, invest in technology and its own network, and promote itself as environmentally friendlier than trucks. CN Rail’s main competition, Canadian Pacific Railway, agreed to acquire U.S.-based railroad Kansas City Southern earlier this year.
