Global Markets: Gunfire erupts at Beirut protest

WINNIPEG, Oct. 14 (MarketsFarm) – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

– At least five people are dead in Beirut and dozens more injured after gunfire broke out at a protest against the judge investigating last year’s deadly port explosion in the Lebanon capital. Hundreds of Hezbollah supporters had gathered to call for the removal of the judge at the head of the investigation, accusing him of bias.

– In an effort to ease mounting supply chain bottlenecks, United States President Joe Biden announced on Wednesday a deal that will see the Port of Los Angeles operate 24 hours a day and seven days a week. Nearby Port of Long Beach is already operating 24/7. Dozens of cargo ships and at least 500,000 containers are waiting to be offloaded at the two ports, causing prices for many goods to rise across the country.

– With the U.S. border set to reopen to vaccinated Canadians in early November, it is still unknown whether or not those with mixed-doses or AstraZeneca will be allowed. While millions of Canadians have received mixed doses of different COVID-19 vaccines, the process has yet to be approved by the U.S. AstraZeneca was also not approved in the country. Guidelines on mixed doses are expected soon.
