WINNIPEG, June 27 (MarketsFarm) – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

– As the G7 met in Germany on Monday, there’s split among the world’s biggest economies when it comes to the war in Ukraine. This comes despite the G-7 having declared they will stand with Ukraine “for as long as it takes.” Looking at the cost of the war in terms of supplying Ukraine and on their economies, France, Germany and Italy are said to be pushing for an end to the war, even if it means Ukraine is to give up territory to Russia. On the other side, the United Kingdom remained firmly against such a resolution to the conflict, fearing it could lead Russia to invading more independent countries that were once part of the Soviet Union. This is the argument Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is expected to make when he speaks to the G-7 today.

– Meanwhile on Sunday, Russia missed a US$100 million interest payment on its debt, the first time such happened since 1918. Reports said Russia transferred the money on May 27 to Euroclear to be distributed among the country’s creditors. A spokesperson for Euroclear said it’s adhering to all relevant international sanctions against Russia, but didn’t confirm if the payment had been blocked during the 30-day grace period. Russian finance minister Anton Siluanov denied the missed payment will have any effect on the country’s economy, pointing to the US$1 billion per day earned through fossil fuel exports.

– Protests on either side of the abortion debate were ramping up in the United States on Monday. This followed the Supreme Court’s move on Friday to overturn the 50-year-old Roe versus Wade ruling that entrenched the federal constitutional right to an abortion. Already, ten states have banned or severely restricted abortions with 16 said to be ready to implement similar legislation. Pro-choice demonstrations took to the streets in several U.S. cities, demanding a woman’s right to choose be protected.
