Global Markets: Earthquake rocks Turkey, Syria

WINNIPEG – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

– A powerful earthquake, measuring 7.8 on the Richter Scale, devastated southeastern Turkey and northern Syria on Monday, killing at least 1,900 people. Hundreds of others are still believed to be under rubble after numerous buildings collapsed. The United States Geological Survey reported at least 30 aftershocks followed, as well as a 7.5-magnitude quake one hour after the first one, centered 100 kilometres away from the original earthquake’s epicentre.

– China accused the U.S. on Monday of indiscriminate use of force in shooting down a suspected unmanned Chinese spy balloon off the Carolina coast on Saturday. China insists that it was a civilian balloon intended for meteorological research. Chinese vice foreign minister Xie Feng said that he lodged a formal complaint with the U.S. Embassy on Sunday, while U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken has cancelled a trip to Beijing intended to ease tensions between the two nations.
