– The French port of Calais was blocked by fishermen on Friday, preventing ferries from entering, amid an ongoing protest over the United Kingdoms failure to issue more licenses for French fishermen to operate in British waters. The blockade lasted 90 minutes before the protest shifted to the tunnel that connects France and Britain under the English Channel.

– The discovery of a new COVID-19 variant in South Africa has spurred a number of countries to impose travel restrictions, including the UK, Israel, and Singapore. The new strain, B.1.1.529, may spread easier and be more resistant to vaccines, according to reports. The World Health Organization cautioned against imposing travel restrictions at this time, saying more research must be done into the transmission of the new variant.
