Global Markets: Inflation rate down in Canada, U.S.

WINNIPEG – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

– Statistics Canada reported on Tuesday that Canada’s annual inflation rate declined to 6.3 per cent in December, compared to 6.8 per cent from the month before. Analysts have predicted the annual rate to be 6.4 per cent prior to the report. On a monthly basis, the consumer price index dropped by 0.6 per cent in December, the largest decline since April 2020. Gasoline prices were 13.1 per cent lower in December than the month before, but grocery prices still rose 11 per cent from the previous year. Meanwhile in the United States, the Labor Department reported on Tuesday the country’s annual inflation rate declined to 6.5 per cent in December from 7.1 per cent in November. Gasoline prices declined 9.4 per cent last month.

– Grygorii Tsekhmistrenko, a Canadian who served as a volunteer medic with Ukrainian forces, was killed in action, according to his family. The B.C. resident was working with Ukraine’s Black team in Bakhmut, a city in the Donetsk region, when his unit was assaulted by Russia’s Wagner Force. Global Affairs Canada declined to give confirmation of Tsekhmistrenko’s death, but if confirmed, he would be the third Canadian volunteer soldier to die in the war in Ukraine.

– China’s National Bureau of Statistics reported on Tuesday that the country’s population had a yearly decline of 850,000 at the end of 2022, its first population decline in decades. China’s population stands at 1.41 billion, excluding Hong Kong, Macau and foreign residents, but its status as the world’s most populous nation is expected to be taken by India later this year.
