Global Markets: New COVID-19 cases up 11 per cent: WHO

WINNIPEG – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

– The World Health Organization (WHO) said on Wednesday the number of new COVID-19 cases worldwide increased by 11 per cent compared to the previous week with the largest increase in the Americas. There were 4.99 million newly identified cases of the coronavirus from Dec. 20 to 26, with Europe accounting for more than half the total and having the highest infection rate out of any other region (304.6 new cases per 100,000 people). In the Americas, cases were up 39 per cent to 1.48 million with the United States seeing 1.18 million cases, up 34 per cent. The number of deaths worldwide went down four per cent to 44,680.

– The Moscow City Court granted a request from the Russian government on Wednesday to shut down the Memorial Human Rights Center, one day after a similar ruling to shut down its sister organization Memorial, which studied Soviet-era repression. Russian authorities had declared both organizations as “foreign agents”. Top U.S. and European officials condemned Russia for the rulings and protesters gathered outside courthouses on both Tuesday and Wednesday.

– Stand News, a pro-democracy website in Hong Kong, was shut down on Wednesday after police raided its office and arrested six current and former editors and board members. Those arrested were eventually charged with “conspiracy to publish a seditious publication”. Denise Ho, a Montreal singer and activist who is popular in Hong Kong, was one of the individuals arrested.

– At least 31 bodies have been recovered after a gold mine in Sudan collapsed on Tuesday. The collapse at the defunct Darsaya mine, located 700 kilometres south of Khartoum, is believed to have killed at least 38 people and injured others. The mine was not functional, but local miners returned to work there after security forces stopped guarding the area.
