WINNIPEG – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

– The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) said on Wednesday it is not considering a change to self-isolation guidelines, despite new guidance by the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shortening the isolation period from 10 days to five for an asymptomatic individual infected with COVID-19 or a close contact. Currently, PHAC recommends an isolation period of 10 days from the onset of symptoms or from the time of receiving a positive test for an asymptomatic case. The CDC made the change citing evidence the virus was most transmissible two days before and three days after symptoms develop, but many doctors believe letting healthcare workers go back to work after five days without additional precautions could be disastrous.

– Amidst rising tensions between Russia and Ukraine, U.S. President Joe Biden and Russian President Vladimir Putin will hold a second call in recent weeks. Senior U.S. and Russian officials will meet in Geneva, Switzerland for further discussions on Jan. 10.

– Iran, through its state broadcaster on Thursday, announced it has test launched a satellite carrier rocket. The report did not say when the rocket was launched and whether the three devices it carried entered orbit around the Earth.
