WINNIPEG, Jan. 13 (MarketsFarm) – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

– In a sudden about-face, the Canadian government backed away on Wednesday afternoon from its strong assertion that truckers crossing the border with the United States would need to quarantined for three days if they are unvaccinated from COVID-19 or received only a single dose. Since November, the federal government had been very determined to impose the mandate that’s scheduled to take effect on Jan. 15. However, the policy reversal only applies to Canadian truckers, while those from the U.S. must to meet the requirements or be turned away at the border.

– Russia deemed talks with the U.S. this week as “unsuccessful” on Thursday as the two countries attempted to reduce tensions in Europe, and over Ukraine in particular. – In the battle against COVID-19, the Africa Centres for Disease Control said it’s working with Pfizer to bring its treatment pill to the continent. Less than 15 per cent of all Africans have at least one dose of a vaccine. On Thursday, Africa exceeded 10 million cases of the coronavirus with more than 230,000 fatalities, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). The WHO noted death rates throughout the continent spiked by 64 per cent during the past week.
