Looks like numbers are picking up quicker than usual this fall. While we saw lots of big calves the last week of September there was a flush of light calves this week. There is excitement over high prices, however, high dollars still come from lbs.
We did see the steers above and below 600 lbs. moderate from the highs of the week previous. With more heifers on offer, we did see them perk up a few pennies.
Lots of calves are heading to Ontario or staying local to get backgrounded before heading East.
The big run of yearlings is nearing its end with fewer to pick from this week, with most heading West. There will still be a strong appetite for strings of yearlings.
Make sure to plan marketing and trucking well in advance this year.

We saw 4,600 cattle through the ring this week at Virden, with 65 per cent being fresh calves, 25 per cent feeders and 10 per cent butcher cattle. Prices were down $5 for steers ranging from 500 lbs. to 800 lbs. Heifer prices also dropped, with the light-weights down $10, 500-600 lbs. down $15 and 600-700 lbs. down $5. Cows came up $2-$3. Southern Alberta buyers snapped up 40 per cent of the cattle, and another 30 per cent went East. Local buyers purchased 10 per cent of the cattle, and 20 per cent went south of the border.
Lots of rain mixed with large volumes this week, pressuring the market. Record volumes are coming in two to three weeks early this year! Likely more downward pressure coming as the big volumes come in.
Second- and third-cut cattle are starting to see heavy discounts to the front-page types.
