The Canadian Hereford Association added several long-time members to its Honour Roll this summer. Wally and Jackie Mitchell operate Roselawn Polled Herefords near Killarney, Man. Both Wally and Jackie have been heavily involved in the Hereford breed and broader agriculture community and have exhibited cattle at shows across the country, with Wally’s favourite accomplishments being Reserve Champion Hereford Female and Steer at the Toronto Royal Winter Fair in 1976 and 1977, respectively. Among numerous accomplishments, Jackie was the first woman in Canada to be president of a provincial Hereford association and Wally served as president of the Killarney Agricultural Society for 25 years.

Chris and Tina Lees began calling their operation C & T Cattle Company soon after they were married in 2005, and built a successful purebred and commercial herd that sold cattle across North America and beyond. Chris has attended every Agribition since its inception and served as president. Both Tina and Chris have filled executive positions for the Saskatchewan Hereford Association. Sadly, Tina lost her battle with cancer in August 2023, and she is fondly remembered for her zest for life, caring for others and passion for the Hereford breed.

Jim and Terry Newton are the third generation on a ranch they operated as Newton Herefords. They are now watching the fourth and fifth generations take the reins. They have sold Herefords across Canada and internationally and have been active organizers and contributors to shows and sales across Western Canada for years. Jim was a founding member of the Alberta Junior Hereford Association and an Alberta Hereford Association director for 52 years, and Terry was a member of the Southern Alberta Hereford Belles for 26 years.

The association also recognized Kurtis Reid through its NextGen Breeder Award. Reid is the fifth generation on the Cliffs Farm at Martensville, Sask. He served as a Canadian Junior Hereford Association delegate for three years and president of the Saskatchewan juniors for two years. He is exploring new avenues for genetic advancement and marketing. He has a large social media following and creates the Lifestock podcast, with an audience of 43,000 listeners. He is active in the show ring as both an exhibitor and judge, having evaluated cattle at the PNE and Expo Boeuf, among other events.

The Canadian Junior Hereford Association had another successful Bonanza junior show in Brandon, Man. Hosted by the Manitoba Junior Hereford Association, the event was held July 24-27. The Champion female was none other than Glenlees 240J Beth 20L, exhibited by Kyla Lees from Arcola, Sask.
