Over the years I’ve attended many Livestock Markets Association of Canada (LMAC) conventions and enjoyed them all. As a cattle producer it’s a great opportunity to sit down with cattle auctioneers and auction mart owners from across Canada and find out a little more about their industry.
This year Rick Wright, competition chairman of LMAC, asked me to be one of five judges for their auctioneer competition. I was privileged to work alongside champion auctioneers and industry leaders from across Canada.
The live auction judges included: Brad Martin (2022 LMAC Canadian Champion), Dean Edge (2006 LMAC Champion), Don Raffan (LMAC Canadian Champion), Shannon Eaton (Eaton Livestock), Jack Chaffe (president of Beef Farmers of Ontario), along with interview judges Cindy Ferraro (Ontario Stockyards), Bryan Danard (Calgary Stockyards) and Ken Lindberg (Perlich Bros. Auctions).

Body condition, nutrition and vaccination for brood cows
One of the remarkable events of the past century related to ranching has been the genetic evolution of brood cows….
This year Olds Auction Mart and the Rosehill family hosted the event. Thirty-five auctioneers from across Canada attended, and there was no shortage of great cattle.
It was a tough competition but once the dust settled there were a few buckles handed out and winners announced:
- Jesse Lawes (Provost Livestock Exchange) was crowned Canadian Champion.
- Tyler Rosehill (Olds Auction Mart ) was Reserve Champion.
- Tyler Slawinski (Gladstone Auction Mart) was third place.
- Casey Lawes (Provost Livestock Exchange) was fourth place.
- Patrick Cassidy (Olds Auction Mart) was fifth place and was also awarded the Most Congenial Auctioneer buckle.
- John Baier from Saskatoon Livestock Sales was Rookie of the Year.
LMAC also honoured several other industry leaders: Dan Rosehill of Olds Auction Mart is Canada’s newest inductee into the Livestock Auctioneer Hall of Fame.
Rob Bergevin from the Foothills Auctioneer group in Stavely, Alta., was awarded the Industry Champion award. This is the fourth time that LMAC has presented the Industry Champion Award, designed to recognize significant contributions to the cattle industry and support for auction markets. The three previous recipients were Steve Primrose, Danny Skeels and Brian Good.
Stockyard of the Year went to Northern Livestock Sales, managed by Brent Brooks with locations in Meadow Lake and Lloydminster, Sask.
