Manitoba Youth Beef Round-Up a big success

Over 100 youth participated in the Manitoba Youth Beef Round-Up this summer.

The Manitoba Youth Beef Round-Up was held last month in Neepawa, Man. The event attracted record numbers, as over 100 youth and 115 head of cattle gathered from Ontario, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. 

Round-Up committee members included Lois McRae, Jake Rawluk, Laura Horner, Emma Harms, Ken and Kerri Hinsburg, Rilla Hunter, Megan Kemp, Samantha Korosil, Lana Krauss, Mary-Jane Orr, Albert and Michelle Rimke, Dalyse Robertson, Alice Rooke, Blair McRae, Kara Thompson and Bobbi Jo Foster. Judges were Justin Harcourt of Quill Lake, Sask., and Mason Beck of Lang, Sask. 

Friday events kicked off with the ever-popular Ag Challenge, where teams participated in a scavenger hunt. Educational workshops included learning how to wash and care for the animal’s hair and grooming, herd health with Dr. Liz Ostendorf (Neepawa Vet Clinic), making a herd health plan, record-keeping and verifying the beef program, health and medicine, mock interviews, branding yourself, filling out applications, and essential human resource guides.

Saturday began bright and early with judging workshops facilitated by Harcourt and Beck, followed by the judging competition. Pee-wee members and new juniors also participated in a Cattle Camp, which included instructions on judging, making rope halters, grooming and showmanship. The evening concluded with group members competing in the cook-off, where each group was provided with a steak and was required to prepare a meal for two discerning judges’ evaluation. Sunday was show day — a few highlights from the show results follow. 

Jordan Frey swept the Angus female classes with the following cattle: Freyburn Blackbird 36M (Champion Angus Heifer Calf ), Freyburn Rally Missie 22L (Champion Angus Yearling Female and Reserve Grand Champion Angus Female), and Freyburn Blackbird 48J and heifer calf (Champion Cow-Calf Angus Female and Grand Champion Angus Female). Kate Hinsburg with KCH Mcallan 404M took Grand Champion Angus Bull Calf, and Hinsburg also took the reserve with KCH the Rock 416M. 

On the Simmental side, Kate Hinsburg took the Champion Simmental Heifer Calf title with KCH Malibu 401M, plus the Champion Simmental Yearling Heifer with Mader Licorice 24L. Her yearling and heifer calf were also awarded Grand Champion Simmental Female and Reserve Champion female, respectively. Cooper Lafreniere won Champion Two-Year-Old Simmental Female and the Reserve Grand Champion Simmental Bull Calf (2L Money Moves 15M). Grand Champion Simmental Bull Calf went to Hayden Collins with Oakview Maverick 51M. 

Champion Fat Steer was awarded to Cohen Canart, and reserve to Ivy Allen. 

Braxton Fehr won Champion Commercial Heifer Calf. Emily Murray took home Champion Commercial Yearling Female and Reserve Grand Champion Commercial Female. Katelyn Rutten won the Champion Senior Commercial Cow-Calf, Grand Champion Commercial Female and Champion Commercial Bull Calf. 

Allie Lavich took the Champion Charolais Heifer Calf. Fisher Cavers won Champion Charolais Yearling Female and Grand Champion Charolais Female with C2 Libbey 17L. Paisley Baron took home the Reserve Champion Charolais Yearling Female and Reserve Grand Champion Charolais Female with Hidden Lake Laurel 130L. 

Harley McCauley’s Sinnibars RB Goldie ET 102M was awarded Champion Hereford Heifer Calf and Grand Champion Hereford Female. Ivy Allen won Champion Hereford Yearling Female and Reserve Grand Champion Hereford Female with Lulu. Champion Hereford Bull Calf went to Teegan Hyndman with TEEG 22H Cal Naughton 435M. 

Champion Mixed Breeds Heifer Calf went to Lillian Seward with her Limousin calf. Seward also won Champion Mixed Breeds Yearling Female (Limousin) and Reserve Grand Champion Mixed Breeds Female (Limousin) with Amaglen Ladybug. Laura Seward was awarded Champion Mixed Cow-Calf and Grand Champion Mixed Breeds Female with Amaglen Kelly Jo (Limousin). 

Nine champion 4-H Heifers along with all the breed champions from the show competed for the Supreme Champion Female of Round-Up 2024. Jordan Frey of Oxbow, Sask., was awarded this honour with a beautiful Roundup belt buckle for his Black Angus Female, Freyburn Blackbird 48J, and her heifer calf .
