Sept. 19 (CNS Canada) – Production reports from the top five edible bean producing states are as follows:
– North Dakota’s dry, edible bean harvest is about 44 per cent done, according the United States Department of Agriculture, which is about average for this time year. Crop condition improved to 56 per cent good to excellent from 50 per cent a week ago. Sixteen per cent of the crop is rated poor to very poor.
– Minnesota has harvested about 44 per cent of its edible bean crop, with 66 per cent rated good to excellent.

– Michigan bean harvest is well behind with just eight per cent harvested and 52 per cent of the crop rated good to excellent.
– Idaho’s bean harvest is well ahead of the usual pace, with 81 per cent in the bin.
The Australian state of New South Wales has received 44 per cent less rain than average through August and there was no let up so far in September, according to the NSW Department of Primary Industries. The limited precipitation and lack of soil moisture has badly affected crop prospects in some areas, especially in western areas of the state. Peas have been seriously affected as has wheat and canola crops.
Academy award winning director James Cameron has unveiled plans to open a multi-million dollar pulse processing facility at Vanscoy, Sask., near Saskatoon. The Verdient Foods Inc. fractionation facility is expected to process yellow peas into protein, starch and fibre products to be used by food makers. Eventually, the plan is to switch to all-organic peas.
