The 2022 Canadian Simmental Association National Convention took place from July 21 to 24, hosted by the Manitoba Simmental Association in Portage la Prairie, Man. During this annual event, participants had the opportunity to tour Comte Industries Ltd., Tuff Livestock Equipment, Prairie Cricket Farms, Divorne Farms Ltd. and Roquette Canada Ltd. 

During this year’s convention, the association also conducted its annual general meeting. The association showed its appreciation to retiring director Roger Deeg and retiring director and president Marlin LeBlanc for their commitment and dedication. Newly elected to the Canadian Simmental Association board of directors were Barclay Smith of Cherhill, Alta., and Randy Noble of Lloydminster, Sask. Shane Williams of East Garafraxa, Ont., was elected as president and Byron Johnson of Amisk, Alta., was elected first vice-president. Scott Matthews of Canton de Hatley, Que. was elected second vice- president. Continuing directors are Ben Farrant of Lousana, Alta., Blair McIntosh of Maymont, Sask., Bill Biglieni of Douglas, Man., and Jennie Mutch of Vernon, P.E.I. 

A convention highlight was the 2022 Friends of Canadian Simmental Foundation auction which raised $123,995 to support the foundation’s programming. A highlight was the bred heifer donated by Everett Olson of Downhill Simmentals which raised $50,000. At the 2022 National Young Canadian Simmental Association show, which was held on the final day of the convention, the foundation presented $15,000 from the auction proceeds to the Young Canadian Simmental Association for ongoing youth activities.

The 2022 Young Canadian Simmental Association’s National Classic completed the week and was attended by almost 36 young members from across Canada. Forty-five head of cattle were displayed in the conformation classes. 

“It’s an exciting time to be part of the Simmental breed as we continue to celebrate the success and growth of the breed,” stated Shane Williams, Canadian Simmental Association president. “We look forward to continued growth as we work at supplying superior genetics to beef producers both in Canada and worldwide.” 

The Ontario Simmental Association looks forward to hosting next year’s convention and AGM in Ancaster August 3 to 7, 2023.
