Friends of Canadian Simmental Foundation scholarships valued at $3,000 each, were awarded to Ariel Wilcox of Treherne, Man., and Brodyn LaBatte of Gladmar, Sask. Wilcox is currently enrolled at the University of Manitoba to obtain her master’s degree of nursing and LaBatte is attending Olds College in Alberta, taking agriculture management with a major production. 

Dr. Dixon Memorial Scholarships in memory of Dr. Allan A. Dixon, valued at $2,000 each were awarded to Bailey McCormack of Grenfell, Sask., and Hannah Derksen of Winkler, Man. McCormack is enrolled at the Western College of Remedial Massage Therapy to obtain her massage therapy diploma and Derksen is at the University of Saskatchewan pursuing veterinary medicine.

Trevor Vance First Year Scholarship, in memory of Trevor Edward Vance, valued at $2,000, is awarded to Jackson Corner of Caledonia, Ont. Corner is pursuing a bachelor of science in agriculture at the University of Guelph.

The Canadian Simmental Association also announced this year’s Award of Excellence recipients. The awards program recognizes breeders who exhibit registered Simmental seedstock across Canada each year.

The fifth-place female was Mader Violet 49H, owned by Hawkin Mader, Carstairs, Alta. Fourth place saw a three-way tie, which included: Erixon Lady 2J, owned by 1076986 B.C. Ltd. DBA KT Ranches, Kelowna, B.C.; J-Star Carolina 18K, owned by J-STAR Livestock, Beachburg, Ont.; and RF Certainly Flirtin 250K, owned by Rancier Farms, Killam, Alta. Third place saw a two-way tie between Donovandale Carefree, owned by Donovandale & J-Star Livestock, Ashton, Ont.; and MJTS 808F Darlin 907J, owned by Wallgren Farms and W2 Land and Cattle, Edgerton, Alta. Second place went to Black Gold MS Hayleigh 220K, owned by Black Gold Simmentals, Lloydminster, Sask. And finally, first place was awarded to Mader Darlin’ 4H, owned by Twin Springs Farm Ltd., Lloydminster, Sask. She was exhibited at Olds Fall Classic, Lloydminster Stockade Round-up and Canadian Western Agribition, earning a total of 114 pts. 

For the bulls, fifth place went to XCEL Kress Earl 405K, owned by XCEL Livestock, Russell, Ont. Fourth was Mader Night Shift 63K, owned by Mader Ranches, Carstairs, Alta. In third was ES/JT Red Bull 115H, owned by JT Livestock Ltd., Stettler, Alta. Second was awarded to Mader Big Energy 97J, owned by Bohrson Marketing Services Ltd., Olds, Alta. Last, the 2022 Canadian Simmental Association Award of Excellence Bull was Black Gold Coliseum 140H, owned by Southpaw Cattle Co. and Black Gold Simmental, Carstairs, Alta. He was exhibited at Olds Fall Classic, Lloydminster Stockade Round-up, Farmfair and Canadian Western Agribition for a total of 125 pts. 

Congratulations to all the Simmental breeders who exhibited a great bunch of Simmental cattle in 2022.

  • Champion Bred and Owned Female (see photo below) was Garren’s Giesele 28F (Garen Skeels).
