Canola stocks increase dramatically in StatsCan report

CNS Canada –– It appears there’s a lot more canola in Prairie fields and bins than anybody thought. Rain in Sask., Man. stalls harvest, causes crop damage

CNS Canada — Rain in Manitoba and Saskatchewan has stalled harvest and caused crop damage, but moving forward, conditions should improve, two industry specialists predict. Shannon Friesen, a regional crops specialist with Saskatchewan Agriculture in Moose Jaw, said recent rains have delayed harvest and stalled maturity in some crops. Producers have found peas and canola […] Read more

Prairie pea yields appear lower in early harvest

CNS Canada — Western Canada’s pea harvest has begun and yields appear to be down, according to a crop management specialist with Saskatchewan Agriculture. “Once farmers cut into the peas they began finding yields maybe half of what they typically expected,” said Shannon Friesen. Excess dryness in the early summer seems to have taken its […] Read more

“A few years ago Dennis McMorris got tired of packing buckets of grain to feed his 350 head of cattle on his farm near Balcarres, Sask. Seaching for “that better way” he eventually developed the Bovine Bucket feeding system which has gone through extensive research and development improvements over the years. The system includes an overhead hopper on one end of the feed auger. The computerized control panel can be set so the auger delivers and drops a measured among of grain out along the feed trough on whatever timing schedule the producer wants. The unit comes in whatever length needed for any size herd. McMorris says he set up the system on his farm so he could feed four different groups of cattle with one Bovine Bucket system — feed grain or ration to a herd of pregnant cows, for example, move them out, then open a gate and bring in a group of weaned calves and so on. The Bovine Bucket was one of the exhibitors at the first-ever Ag In Motion farm show this week near Saskatoon. Along with the Bovine Bucket there were other displays of livestock handling and management equipment. The livestock component of the outdoor farm show will be expanding in future years. NW Sask. sees patchy canola, better cereals

Spring has been tough on many canola crops in northwestern Saskatchewan. “Canola — it’s kind of hit and miss. They’re just all over the place,” said Stephanie McMillan, an agronomist with AgriTeam Services at Glaslyn, Sask., about 90 km south of Meadow Lake. One field might have some plants at the two- to four-leaf stage, […] Read more

Yields to take precedence over acres in Canada

CNS Canada –– Canadian farmers seeded a bit more canola and a bit less wheat than originally expected, according to updated acreage estimates from Statistics Canada, released Tuesday. However, worsening drought conditions in the western Prairies over the past month and the need for reseeding due to frost damage earlier in June mean actual yields […] Read more
