Feed: Australia prepares for dry weather

CNS Canada — Following are a few highlights in the Canadian and world feed grains markets on Thursday, Oct. 22.

• CBOT corn futures were down one to two cents at midday Thursday. Favourable weather conditions in the U.S. corn belt enabled farmers to accelerate the harvest.

• Feed barley bids in the key cattle feeding area of Lethbridge are in the C$210-$215 per tonne area, according to Market Place Commodities. Feed wheat prices are in the C$215-$220 range.

• According to information released this week from China’s General Administration of Customs, barley imports rose 66.4 per cent month over month in September to 1.295 million tonnes.

• Reports out of China indicate the country could import less corn this year as it encourages state processors to use domestic supplies.

• Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology is advising farmers to prepare for a severe bushfire season and possible drought across much of the country.
