Nicoll’s grass-fed beef genetics on block

Cattle producers looking to enter the grassfed beef market will have a rare opportunity to select from a herd developed specifically for that purpose on Tuesday, Sept. 30.

That’s when Winnipeg Livestock Auction Sales Ltd., will disperse the herd belonging to long-time grassfed beef producer and promoter Glen Nicoll.

The Fraserwood, Man. rancher, who is also a well-known cattle market columnist and freelance writer for the Manitoba Co-operator, is in an Edmonton hospital with a brain tumour.

The sale will be held at Winnipeg Livestock Sales’ auction mart in the RM of Rosser, just northwest of Winnipeg.

The entire herd, consisting of about 140 bred cows and unbred heifers, 87 calves and seven bulls, will be on the block. These are grass-based Red Angus cross genetics from M4 Beef Booster, Shoreline Stockfarm and TK Ranch. The herd has been exposed to bulls on pasture since July 27.

Nicoll has been marketing grassfed beef, noted for its lean nutritional profile rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, direct to consumers and through selected Winnipeg restaurants over the past two decades.
