Global Markets: 18 dead after glacier breaks away in India

WINNIPEG, Feb. 3 (MarketsFarm) – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

– Hundreds of people are missing and at least 18 confirmed dead in northern India after a glacier broke away from the Himalayan mountains and triggered flooding. The resulting surge of water and rocks washed away a hydroelectric project in the mountainous region. An estimated 37 workers at another hydroelectric project downstream are believed to be trapped in a tunnel. Search and rescue operations are underway.

– Official data out of China showed no new locally transmitted cases of COVID-19 in the country for the first time in nearly two months. The 14 new cases that were reported on Feb. 7 were all imported infections from international travel, according to the National Health Commission statement.

– Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers won the Super Bowl on Sunday, defeating the Patrick Mahomes-led Kansas City Chiefs 31-9. At 43, Brady won his record seventh Super Bowl in his tenth appearance at the National Football League championship game.
