Global Markets: First vaccine administered in U.K.

WINNIPEG, Dec. 8 (MarketsFarm) – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

– The first doses of Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine have been administered to 90-year-old Margaret Keenan in the United Kingdom on what officials in the country have deemed V-Day. Canada’s own immunization will start in the next few weeks, with 249,000 doses expected before the end of the year.

– The U.K. and the European Union have reached a deal on Northern Ireland, as a Jan. 1 Brexit deadline fast approaches. The border between Northern Ireland and Ireland is the only land border between the U.K. and the EU. More trade, customs, and fishing rights still need to be worked out.

– Eritrean soldiers have reportedly crossed into Ethiopia, heightening tensions in the region as both country’s fight against the rebel Tigray People’s Liberation Front. Eritrea has denied involvement in the conflict. Meanwhile, a United Nations team in the northern Ethiopian region was reportedly fired on after breaching checkpoints and entering a restricted area.
