– Despite later weakening into a tropical storm as it made its way further inland, Hurricane Ida still left a path of destruction as it hit Louisiana on Sunday. Governor John Bel Edwards asked residents to stay where they are as Louisiana deployed more than 1,600 search and rescue personnel. Flooding threatened hundreds of homes and more than one million customers in Louisiana and Mississippi were without power. With winds clocking at 230 kilometres per hour, Ida was the fifth-strongest hurricane to reach the United States mainland.

– The Islamic State (IS) group claimed responsibility for another rocket fire attack targeting Kabul’s international airport as it hit a nearby neighborhood on Monday. The group launched an attack last week that killed more than 170 people, including 13 U.S. service personnel. Monday also marks the eve of the deadline for U.S. troops to withdraw from Afghanistan after 20 years of fighting. The Taliban, who have fought IS in the past, has now tightened security around the airfield.
– The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reported that North Korea has resumed operations of a nuclear reactor since July, raising fears of weapons tests in the region. The IAEA has not had access to nuclear sites in North Korea since 2009. In 2019, North Korea leader Kim Jong Un offered to dismantle the site if the U.S. provided relief on sanctions, a proposal then-President Donald Trump rejected.
