Ontario reported its highest number of new COVID-19 cases since July on Tuesday. Health officials confirmed there were 125 new cases in the province, which comes after daily case numbers were lower than 100 for two consecutive days. Ontario has seen over 40,000 cases, and about 3,000 are currently active.
Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez nominated Senator Bernie Sanders for President of the United States at the Democratic National Convention on Tuesday night. The move confused some political pundits, but it’s standard procedure for any candidate who passed the delegate threshold to receive a ‘roll call nomination speech.’ Ocasio-Cortez later tweeted “I extend my deepest congratulations to Joe Biden – let’s go win in November.” Biden was ultimately crowned as the Democratic nominee for November’s presidential election.

On Tuesday, Mali’s President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita resigns and dissolved parliament, after coup leaders detained him at gunpoint. The soldiers who overthrew the government pledged to restore stability and oversee an election within a “reasonable period.” A spokesperson for the group also said they acted in order to prevent Mali from falling “further into chaos.”
Newly-released body camera footage showed Toronto Raptors president Masai Ujiri was shoved twice by Alameda County sheriff’s deputy Alan Strickland while attempting to reach the court following the team’s NBA championship game in June 2019. Strickland originally claimed that Ujiri shoved him first, but the footage disproves that claim. The Raptors said in a statement on Tuesday, “We are mindful this remains before the courts, but we have always maintained that the claims made against Masai are baseless and entirely without merit. We believe this video evidence shows exactly that — Masai was not an aggressor, but instead was the recipient of two very violent, unwarranted actions.”
