On October 4, the Canadian Roundtable for Sustainable Beef (CRSB) announced proposed changes to the standards for sustainable beef production and processing, which are part of the Certified Sustainable Beef Framework. Now, they are seeking input from the public on these changes.
The framework was launched in 2017 to recognize sustainable practices in beef production, as well as sustainability standards. As part of a five-year review, which includes stakeholder consultation, the CRSB says it has conducted an in-depth look at each indicator in both beef production and processing, explored areas for improvement and identified gaps.

According to the press release from CRSB, most of the changes to the framework are to the “standards” section. The standards are “indicators of sustainability encompassing the five principles of sustainable beef that are audited in beef production and primary processing operations,” the CRSB website notes.
The press release says the proposed changes to the framework are focused primarily on realigning with the 2030 Canadian Beef Goals.
The 2030 Canadian Beef Goals are an initiative from a large group of Canadian beef organizations, such as the CRSB and the CCA, and consist of 10 goals on how to make climate change-related improvements within the sector, in a variety of different ways.
“The engagement of our members and stakeholders during this review demonstrates the commitment across the Canadian beef value chain to continually advance beef sustainability practices, while also aligning with public interest in sustainability,” says Kristine Tapley, chair of the CRSB Framework Committee, in the press release.
The press release says there will be an online 60-day comment period, which opens on October 4 and closes on December 2, 2022.
