Congratulations to Emma Cross, one of this year’s well-deserving recipients of the Canadian Junior Hereford Association Honour Roll! Cross is a fourth-generation Hereford breeder that grew up on Bar Pipe Hereford Ranch in Okotoks, Alta. She continued the family tradition by starting her own herd under the name Sundance Herefords. She currently runs 25 head at Finseth Herefords, Beaver County, Alta. Cross works on the ranch and prepares cattle for shows and sales, artificially inseminates her own cattle and is responsible for the social media and marketing decisions. She’s active in the Hereford breed and her provincial and national junior associations and is currently president of the Canadian Junior Hereford Association. She recently convocated from the University of Saskatchewan with a bachelor of science in agriculture, and is currently employed with the Canadian Cattle Association and VBP+ in communications and advocacy roles.

Meanwhile, the Keith Gilmore Prize for Beef Cattle Innovation $10,000 scholarship went to Saskatchewan’s Tara Funk. The foundation was established to provide scholarships to worthy applicants in the fields of agriculture, veterinary medicine and agricultural journalism. The foundation is named in honour of the late Keith Gilmore, editor and publisher of The Canadian Hereford Digest for 30 years. It recognizes his contribution to the Hereford breed, agricultural journalism and the beef cattle industry.

Congratulations also to Gabrielle Cheremshynski and Daniel Schuepback, both from Alberta; Hannah Stokdijk of N.S. and Maggie-Jo Hickson of Ontario on winning the 2022 Hereford Youth Scholarship for $2,500.
