This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Salers breed in Canada. Mark November 8-9 on your calendar and head over to Farmfair International to help Salers breeders from across Canada celebrate this historical event.
Festivities kick off with the Purebred and Optimizer Show on November 8, followed by the Neogen Cattlemen’s Choice show November 9. The Salers Golden sale runs November 8-9 with DLMS giving added coverage.

The Salers Association of Canada is also offering two memorial scholarships valued at $2,250 each this fall in honour of Saler breeders Mitch Jones and Brian Walker.
Mitch Jones was a purebred cattle breeder and owner of Tierra Sol Cattle Company. Jones had great passion for the Salers breed and appreciated good cattle. He was always willing to lend a hand, share his knowledge, and was open to having a conversation with anyone. Many described him as a gentle giant, a straight shooter and, most importantly, a mentor. Jones’s favourite livestock show was Farmfair International, where he was heavily involved in launching the Farmfair International Supreme. Therefore, it is most fitting that the recipient of this scholarship will be announced during the Farmfair Supreme Show.
This scholarship will be awarded to someone who shares the same leadership, kindness and mentoring qualities he exhibited. Anyone can nominate a worthy recipient. Just fill out the nomination form and send it to the Salers Association of Canada office at [email protected]. The worthy recipient must be between 15-25 years old as of November 1, involved in the agriculture industry and an exhibitor at Farmfair International. Preference will be given to Salers breeders. Application deadline is November 1.
Brian Walker was a community man and generous with his time especially when it came to what he loved — teaching, farming and, most importantly, his family. He started his teaching career with three fondly remembered years at North Minto, N.B. He then proudly returned to Sussex where he thoroughly enjoyed 30 meaningful years at Sussex Regional High School. There, he coached many sports teams and was proud to foster a love for agriculture in youth. He was also a dedicated supporter of the co-op movement, the soil and crop association and an active 4-H leader. Walker and Linda built their family farm from the ground up. He loved working on the farm and especially working with his Salers.
This scholarship is open to all Canadian citizens pursuing a post-secondary education who have completed at least the first year at a recognized university or college. They must be returning to school within the calendar year. Any field of study will qualify but a post-secondary program in or related to agriculture, science or business is preferable.
Selection will be based on 4-H and farm involvement, community participation, extracurricular activities and academic standings. The student’s most recent post-secondary transcripts, a resumé and essay must accompany the application form. The required 300- to 500-word essay must explain farm involvement, volunteer experience along with future employment ambitions. Application deadline is October 31, 2023.
