Justin Hozack is a cow-calf producer who relies heavily on stock dogs to help move his cattle.

“Everybody should have a stock dog. Once you have one it’s like losing your Leatherman off your belt as far as I’m concerned,” said Hozack, at Ag in Motion this past summer.

Having a trained stock dog to help move your cattle is essential to getting the work done, but the other part of the equation – how your cattle respond to a dog’s herding behaviours – is just as important to observe, especially if your dog is in the learning stages.

Here, Canadian Cattlemen editor Lisa Guenther talks with Hozack about his approach to working with stock dogs and how experienced dogs are a better approach to help break in your cattle herd.
